The 1981 Big East Tournament was held from March 6th to March 9th, 1981. It was the second edition of the tournament, after the inaugural one was held in 1980. The tournament was held in the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
The tournament featured 10 teams, including five that had joined the Big East for the 1980-81 season. The teams were divided into two divisions - the East and the West. The East division consisted of Boston College, Connecticut, Providence College, St. John's, and Syracuse. The West division included Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, Villanova, and newly-added Syracuse.
The tournament saw some upsets, with Seton Hall beating out top-seeded Pittsburgh 87-80 in the semifinals. However, in the championship game, Syracuse defeated Villanova 83-80 to win their first Big East Tournament title.
The tournament MVP was Syracuse's guard Erich Santifer, who scored 20 points in the championship game.
